‘Sex Life Is...’: AR Rahman’s Ex-Wife Saira Banu’s Lawyer Cites Expectations, Speaks on Bollywood Splits
In a surprising turn of events, the renowned musician AR Rahman and his wife, Saira Banu, have decided to part ways after nearly three of marriage. This development has left fans and the public alike in a state of disbelief, pondering over the potential reasons that led to the dissolution of such a long-standing union. The couple, who have been together for 30 years, made their separation official through a joint statement released by their legal representative a late Tuesday evening.

Vandana Shah, the legal counsel for Saira Banu, shed light on the complexities of marital relationships within the Bollywood industry, which often diverge significantly from those outside of it.
According to Shah, the glittering lifestyle of Bollywood often masks the mundane reality that leads to many couples parting ways. "Their (Bollywood) lives are very different. I don't think infidelity is the cause of a lot of breakdowns in marriages. What is the cause of that marriage breakdown? One is boredom in a marriage because you have seen it all. They move on from one marriage to another because of boredom and that is very peculiar to Bollywood and super-rich families," Shah remarked during her appearance on The Chill Hour podcast. It's important to note, her insights were aimed at Bollywood marriages broadly and were not direct comments on Rahman and Banu's split.

Shah further elaborated on the unique pressures faced by couples in the limelight, which often lead to the disintegration of their relationships. According to her, the expectations surrounding intimacy in such marriages are significantly heightened, which can create additional strain. "Secondly, I think they live very different sexual lives which are not out there. The expectations from a sex life are much higher than maybe a normal person's marriage… Third, adultery happens and one-night stands really don't matter as much. I'm not a part of Bollywood, I'm just saying from whatever cases have come to me. The main issues are boredom, not being given enough importance or having to listen to others who are not part of the marriage. Others can be the mother, the brother who is providing or the father-in-law," she detailed.
Despite the public curiosity and the ensuing media frenzy around Rahman and Banu's separation, Shah has remained tight-lipped about the specifics of their divorce. She emphasized the genuine nature of both Rahman and Banu, underscoring that their decision to separate was made with a lot of thought and was not a hasty or superficial one. "Both of them are extremely genuine, and this decision was not taken lightly. It is not what you would call a sham marriage." She also highlighted that the divorce proceedings have been amicable, with no discussions around the financial aspects as yet.
The couple is blessed with three children: two daughters, Khatija and Rahima, and a son, Ameen Rahman. In these challenging times, the children have sought privacy, a request that has been echoed by the couple and their legal representation. Vandana Shah, in a statement quoted by ETimes, expressed her contentment regarding the dignified manner in which the marriage concluded. "Every long marriage goes through ups and downs, and I am extremely happy that if it has come to an end, it has done so in a dignified manner. Both Rahman and Saira will continue to support each other and wish each other well."
