'Raayan' Review: For Fans Of Action Films Only

Dhanush celebrates a major milestone with his 'Raayan', which was released on Friday. This film marks his second foray into directing, with Kalanithi Maran backing the project under the Sun Pictures banner. Featuring a stellar ensemble cast that includes SJ Suryah, Prakash Raj, Selvaraghavan, Sundeep Kishan, Kalidas Jayaram, Dushara Vijayan, Aparna Balamurali, and Saravanan, and with music composed by the legendary AR Rahman, Raayan has generated considerable buzz. As Dhanush steps into both leading and directorial roles, expectations are high. But does Raayan live up to the hype? Here's a closer look at the film and its execution.

Raayan Review For Fans Of Action Films Only

Story
Raayan follows Kaartavaraayan, or Raayan (Dhanush), who leads a peaceful life in Anjanaouram with his siblings: Muthuvelaraayan (Sundeep Kishan), Maanikyaraayan (Kalidas Jayaram), and sister Durga (Dushara Vijayan). Their tranquillity is disrupted when Muthu clashes with the henchmen of local don Dorai (Saravanan), sparking a dangerous rivalry. Enter Sethuram (SJ Suryah), a gangster with a deadly scheme targeting Raayan. As the plot unfolds, the film explores Raayan's true identity and purpose.

Review
Anticipation was high for 'Raayan' given Dhanush's dual role as both actor and director. While Dhanush's directorial skills are commendable, the film struggles to stand out. Sundeep Kishan delivers a notable performance, especially with his character's morally ambiguous traits. His interactions with Dhanush and Aparna Balamurali add depth to the film.

Dushara Vijayan also impresses, with her character gaining more intensity in the latter half. SJ Suryah provides a strong performance as the antagonist, though his character's motivations lack depth and the conflict with Dhanush feels underdeveloped.

The film's plot, while engaging at times, does not offer many new twists. The slow-paced narrative detracts from the overall impact, and the conflict between SJ Suryah and Dhanush lacks a compelling hook. Notably, the motivation behind the brothers betraying the hero is completely unconvincing. The second half of the film feels unnecessarily stretched with some superfluous scenes.

Supporting roles, including those of Prakash Raj and Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, feel underutilized. However, AR Rahman's music and Om Prakash's cinematography are top class.

Overall, 'Raayan' serves as a decent action movie but falls short of being a standout entertainer. If you are a fan of action movies, this film is for you.
