Is The Oscars Awards Ceremony Cancelled Or Postponed Over Los Angeles Wildfires? Academy Clears The Air

Amid rumours of the the 97th Oscars Awards getting cancelled over the Los Angeles fires, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has dismissed the reports, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Reports suggesting a potential cancellation had gained traction after an article published by the U.K. tabloid The Sun claimed the Academy was secretly plotting significant changes to the event due to the wildfires.

The Hollywood Reporter, however, confirmed that the ceremony remains scheduled for March 2, 2025, at the Dolby Theatre. In a statement, the Academy reassured its commitment to celebrating the film industry's resilience and paying tribute to frontline workers aiding with the wildfire crisis.

The false claims, which included mentions of a "secret contingency strategy" involving stars like Tom Hanks, Meryl Streep, and Steven Spielberg, were widely circulated after being picked up by various outlets. The Academy categorically denied the existence of such a committee or plan.

The statement emphasized the significance of the Oscars as a platform to unite the community and support relief efforts for those affected by the wildfires. The Academy reaffirmed its intention to host the gala evening as planned, dismissing the rumors as baseless.

However, Academy CEO Bill Kramer and President Janet Yang have expressed their sorrow over the wildfires. "The Academy's thoughts and deepest condolences are with our fellow members and colleagues who have been impacted by the Los Angeles-area fires. We stand united woth MPTF to support our industry," the message read.
