Hania Aamir Controversy Derails Indian Release Of ‘Sardaar Ji 3’
In a storm of controversy that erupted even before the film hit screens, the Punjabi movie Sardaar Ji 3-starring Diljit Dosanjh and Pakistani actress Hania Aamir-has come under intense public and industry scrutiny in India. The backlash follows the April 2025 Pahalgam terror attack, which reignited a nationwide sentiment against cross-border cultural ties and led to a fresh ban on Pakistani artistes in Indian films.
Producer Breaks Silence on Casting Decision
Producer Gunbir Singh Sidhu, facing mounting criticism, clarified that the casting of Hania Aamir and other Pakistani actors was finalized long before the current India-Pakistan tensions and the Pahalgam incident. According to Sidhu, the film was shot and completed prior to these developments, distancing the production timeline from the ongoing geopolitical turmoil.

FWICE Objection and Censorship Roadblock
Despite this explanation, the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) lodged a formal objection, urging the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to block the film's release in India. With regulatory resistance growing and outrage swelling on social media, the filmmakers made a pivotal decision: Sardaar Ji 3 would not be released in Indian cinemas.
Indian Theatres Skipped, Global Release Confirmed
In response to the controversy, the team opted to bypass Indian theatres entirely, instead scheduling an overseas-only release on June 27, 2025. The decision underscores the volatile climate surrounding Indo-Pakistani artistic collaborations and the risks producers face when navigating politically sensitive territory.
Online Backlash and Hania Aamir's Clarification
The digital uproar was swift and polarizing. A wave of users called for a boycott, accusing the filmmakers of betraying national sentiment. Meanwhile, a smaller section defended the film's creative merit and pre-conflict production timeline.
Fueling the controversy further was a fake social media post falsely attributed to Hania Aamir, claiming she had made anti-India comments about the Pahalgam attack. The actress promptly denied the allegation, stating she never made any such remarks and expressed empathy for the victims.
As Sardaar Ji 3 prepares for its global release, the film stands at the center of a cultural clash-caught between artistic expression and rising nationalism, with its fate in India sealed by timing, tragedy, and intensifying political divides.
