Vande Metro Trial Run Between Chennai-Katpadi: What Is This New Variant Of Vande Bharat? Details Inside

Vande Metro, a metro variant of the Vande Bharat trains, will soon begin commercial operations on short-distance routes. The first trial run is scheduled for August 3 between Chennai Beach and Katpadi Junction, with the Chief Commissioner of Railway Safety (CCRS) onboard. This new train aims to replace the Mainline Multiple Electric Units (MEMUs).

Trial Run Details

The trial run will start at 9:30 am from Chennai Beach Station and reach Villivakkam at 10:10 am for officers to board. After a five-minute stop, it will head towards Katpadi, arriving at 11:55 am. The return journey will commence at 12:15 pm from Katpadi and conclude at Chennai Beach by 2 pm, according to a report in Deccan Herald.

The prototype of the Vande Metro was rolled out from the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai a few months ago. This fully air-conditioned train can reach speeds of up to 130 km per hour and includes features like automatic doors, improved toilets, and infotainment systems.

Facilities and Features

Unlike the Vande Bharat trains, Vande Metro will not have pantry cars but will offer space for standees due to its short-distance routes. Each coach can seat 100 passengers and accommodate over 200 standees. Sources mentioned that every alternative coach would have a power pack under it, enhancing acceleration compared to MEMUs where every fourth coach has a power pack.

The CCRS is expected to visit ICF on August 2 before participating in the trial run the next day. "This trial run from Chennai Beach to Katpadi Junction covers 130 km," said a source familiar with the matter. "The entourage will use the same train for their return journey."

Design and Deployment

As per the report, it has been designed primarily for intercity short-distance travel. Vande Metro features double leaf doors for easy boarding and de-boarding. These AC trains are intended for distances within 200-250 km from major cities like Chennai and Mumbai.

It remains uncertain whether the first Vande Metro service will operate on the busy route between Chennai Beach and Katpadi or another route. Thousands of people travel daily between these two cities.

Officials highlighted that six coaches would have underslung power packs, contributing to better acceleration. This design improvement aims to enhance the commuter experience on short-distance routes.

The introduction of Vande Metro marks a significant step in modernising India's rail network, offering enhanced facilities for daily commuters while maintaining efficiency and comfort.
