Thalapathy Vijay Urges Tamil Nadu Government Not To Implement CAA, Here's Why

Kollywood actor turned politician Thalapathy Vijay, who has proved the metal of his acting skills worldwide, on Monday came out heavily on the Narendra Modi government for implementing controversial the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) 2019 weeks before the Lok Sabha elections. Taking it to Twitter, Actor Vijay, also chief the chief of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) said, "It is not acceptable to implement any law like the Indian Citizenship Amendment Act 2019 (CAA) in an environment where all citizens of the country live with social harmony."

His statement came hours after the Ministry of Home Affairs shared a gazette notification to implement the CAA, which opens doors for permanent residence for Hindu migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan who entered India before December 31, 2024. Notably, the CAA bill was already passed by the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha four years ago, and now it has been forced into action.

Reacting to the Central Government's latest decision, Thalapathy urged Tamil Nadu's MK Stalin government not to implement the law in the state. "The leaders should ensure that this law does not get implemented in Tamil Nadu," an official statement from Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) reads.

Not just Thalapathy, many other opposition leaders including Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin, AIMIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi, senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, and West Bengal CM and chief of Trinamool Congress Mamata Banerjee slammed the Narendra Modi government over the CAA implementation calling it "an agenda to create a divide" or an attempt to do polarisation ahead of the Lok Sabha elections 2024.

Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin termed the implementation of CAA as BJP's "divisive agenda", adding that "people of this country will teach them (BJP) a befitting lesson" in the elections.

On the other side, the BJP is calling it a historic day for non-muslim migrants residing in India, who will be officially a part of this country. Union Minister Amit Shah lauded and thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for fulfilling one more promise.

"PM Narendra Modi has delivered on another commitment and realised the promise of the makers of our constitution to the Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians living in those countries," Amit Shah said in a tweet.
