Tamil Nadu Weather Update: 3 North Interior Districts Still Sizzle; Chennai Cools Down With Rain

Several districts in north interior Tamil Nadu got a relief from the heatwave on Wednesday, with many places reporting temperatures below 40.0°C.

While for weeks, 10 districts consistently surpassed 40.0°C, the number of districts recording the highest maximum temperature dropped to three on Wednesday, according to data released by the meteorological department.

In the 24-hour period ending at 8.30 pm today, maximum temperatures across Tamil Nadu were generally within normal ranges, with some areas experiencing above-normal temperatures, particularly in the interior plains. Coastal regions of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal saw normal temperatures.

The highest maximum temperature was recorded in Karur Paramathi at 41.2°C (+4.9°C), followed by Erode at 41.0°C (+3.5°C), and Madurai_AP at 40.7°C (+3.1°C).

Interior plains of Tamil Nadu recorded temperatures between 37-39°C, while coastal areas saw temperatures ranging from 32°C to 37°C. Hilly regions experienced temperatures between 22°C to 30°C. Chennai recorded normal maximum temperatures, with Meenambakkam at 37.1°C (-0.5°C) and Nungambakkam at 35.4°C (-1.0°C).

The weather department has predicted light to moderate rains with thunderstom, lighting and gusty winds with speed reaching 30-40 kmph at one or two places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal area.

"Heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Tirupattur, Hill areas of Tirunelveli, Theni and Thenkasi districts of Tamil Nadu," the statement said.

Meanwhile, the state capital Chennai got a respite from the heat on Thursday as a few parts received rains. Netizens on social media are sharing that it is raining in Koyambedu, Arumbakkam, Kolathur-Villivakkam stretch and a few other areas.

"Sky condition is likely to be partly cloudy. Light/Moderate rain is likely to occur in some areas. Maximum temperature is likely to be 35-36°C and Minimum temperature is likely to be 28-29°C," the IMD said in its latest forecast for Chennai.
