Tamil Nadu School Holiday: How Many Days Off Will Children Get In February 2026?

After a holiday-heavy stretch over the past couple of months, school and college students in Tamil Nadu are now bracing for a comparatively tight academic schedule. December and early January offered ample breaks, giving students frequent opportunities to step away from classrooms and enjoy extended rest periods. With festivals, national holidays and regular weekends falling close to each other, attendance calendars were lighter than usual.

Even January, which is otherwise seen as a busy academic month, came with several breaks. Students enjoyed holidays for Pongal, Republic Day and Thiruvalluvar Day, apart from the usual Saturdays and Sundays. For many families, this meant travel plans, family gatherings and much-needed relaxation after the year-end academic rush.

However, the scenario has changed as the calendar turns ahead. Unlike previous months, the current period offers no additional festival holidays for students. Thaipusam and Maha Shivaratri, which in earlier years had resulted in school holidays, have both fallen on Sundays this time. As a result, students have effectively "missed" two holidays they would normally expect in the academic calendar.

According to school authorities, the current month will have a total of eight holidays, accounting only for Saturdays and Sundays, and 22 working days. This marks a clear shift from the relaxed schedules seen earlier and signals a return to full-fledged academic routines across schools and colleges.

While the absence of extra holidays may disappoint students, educators see a silver lining. Teachers believe that the uninterrupted working days will give students valuable time to revise lessons and prepare more thoroughly for the upcoming public examinations. With board exams approaching fast, consistent classroom engagement is being viewed as an advantage rather than a setback.

The Directorate of Government Examinations (DGE), Tamil Nadu, has already announced the public examination schedule for 2026, putting academic focus firmly back on studies. Class 12 board examinations will be held from March 2 to March 26, 2026, while Class 10 (SSLC) examinations are scheduled from March 11 to April 6, 2026. Ahead of the theory exams, practical examinations for Class 12 students will take place from February 9 to February 14, 2026. For Class 10 students, practical exams are slated between February 23 and February 28, 2026.

School administrators say the steady run of working days will help them complete revisions, conduct preparatory tests and clear students' doubts well before the examinations begin. Parents, too, have welcomed the structured timetable, noting that fewer breaks can help children stay focused and maintain exam momentum.

As the festive breaks give way to a disciplined academic phase, students across Tamil Nadu are now expected to make the most of the available classroom time. With board exams looming large, the coming weeks are likely to play a crucial role in shaping their performance and confidence.
