Tamil Nadu Rains: Schools, Colleges, Govt Offices In Chennai & 3 Other Districts To Remain Closed Tomorrow

In anticipation of the forecasted heavy rains, the Tamil Nadu government has declared a holiday for schools, colleges, government offices, and public undertakings in the districts of Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpet for Wednesday.

Despite these closures, essential services such as the police, fire and rescue operations, municipal services, water supply, and others will continue to operate as normal. This announcement comes in response to the meteorology department's warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall in several districts, including but not limited to Tiruvallur, Chennai, and Kancheepuram.

In preparation for the expected deluge, the government has rolled out a comprehensive response plan. A substantial deployment of rescue teams, including 16 squads from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and 10 from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), has been made.

Furthermore, 89 boats are ready for rescue operations in Chennai, highlighting the administration's readiness to handle the situation. To offer shelter to those affected, especially in low-lying areas, 5,147 relief camps have been established throughout the state, with 300 in Chennai alone. To ensure maximum reach, precautionary messages have been sent to 85 lakh mobile phones via a common alerting protocol.

Since October 1, Tamil Nadu has faced a significant amount of rainfall, with totals reaching 10.52 cm—a 68% increase from the usual figures. The last 24 hours alone saw the state receiving 2.241 cm of rain, with specific areas experiencing notably high rainfall; Kudimiyanmalai in Pudukottai topped the chart with 13.4 cm.

Chennai's average rainfall was recorded at 6.5 cm, while other areas such as Gummidipoondi in Tiruvallur and Malar Colony in Anna Nagar zone received 10 cm and 8 cm, respectively.
