Tamil Nadu Dam Levels (July 23): Water Level In Mettur & Other Dam Rise
The Stanley Reservoir at Mettur Dam witnessed a 30-foot rise in water level over a period of seven days, from July 15 to July 22, due to water releases from Karnataka's Krishnaraja Sagar and Kabini dams.
On July 14, Karnataka initially released water into the Cauvery River at a rate of 20,000 cusecs, later increasing the flow to 80,000 cusecs.

This surge in inflow, exceeding the outflow, led to a steady increase in the Mettur Dam's water level. This trend is not limited to Mettur alone; many dams have reported rising water levels.
Tamil Nadu's extensive dam network is crucial for managing the state's water resources. These engineering feats are essential for meeting the region's water supply needs, including drinking water and electricity generation.
The state boasts 116 large dams, with 78 managed by the Tamil Nadu Water Resources Department (TNWRD). Key dams, such as the Mettur Dam on the Cauvery River and the Vaigai Dam in the Western Ghats, are vital for agriculture, power generation, and water supply.
Despite occasional disputes, the Mullaperiyar Dam remains a cornerstone of Tamil Nadu's water security. These dams play a critical role in regulating river flows, managing floods and droughts, and significantly contributing to the state's socio-economic development through irrigation, drinking water supply, and hydropower generation.
