'Ponniyin Selvan' box office collection (Tamil Nadu): Will Vikram-starrer cross Rs 200-cr mark in its lifetime

Chennai, Oct 12: Mani Ratnam's 'Ponniyin Selvan' has emerged as the second biggest hit at the box office in Tamil Nadu. The mega-budget film, which was released to a gigantic expectations on September 30, has grossed over Rs 150 crore in its home territory and now expected to cross Rs 200-crore mark in its lifetime

As per the trade estimates, 'Ponniyin Selvan' has grossed over Rs 265 crore in India with a nett income of Rs 220+ crore. The worldwide collection of the flick by the end of 12 days is around Rs 420 crore.

However, the film, though surpassed the worldwide collection of 'Vikram, is still far away from beating the record of Kamal Haasan-starrer in Tamil Nadu where it had reportedly grossed Rs 190 crore. Trade trackers are hoping that the Vikram-starrer will surpass Rs 200-crore mark in the state as audience are still thronging to theatres to enjoy the Mani Ratnam's magnum opus on silver screens.

From the overseas centres, the multilingual film has amassed over Rs 150 crore. The major contribution has come from the US where it has raked in over Rs 47 crore. It is now the highest-grossing movie of all-time in North America. In Malayasia and Australia too, the film has performed well.

'Ponniyin Selvan: 1' is a historical film based on Kalki's novel of the same name. The film stars Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Karthi, Jayam Ravi and Trisha among others.

The second part is likely to be out next year.
