Live Tirunveli Election Results 2024: Nainar Nagenthran Vs Robert Bruce

The counting of votes polled in the April 19 Lok Sabha elections to 39 constituencies in Tamil Nadu began at 8 AM across the state on Tuesday. Counting began amid a heavy police security in all of the 39 counting centres. Postal ballots were taken up first.

As many as 950 candidates are in the fray in the 39 Lok Sabha segments in the state, which had a voter turnout of 69.72 per cent in the April 19 single-phase election in Tamil Nadu.

In the traditional political landscape of southern Tamil Nadu, the Congress has historically held sway, while the BJP is making concerted efforts to carve a niche by tapping into local socio-political dynamics.

These electoral battlegrounds not only underscore Congress's determination to safeguard its strongholds but also serve as a platform for the BJP to engineer social alliances, promoting its Hindutva ideology within the Dravidian political framework. As rivals scrutinize incumbent MPs and the performance of the DMK government, Congress's strategy hinges on capitalizing on potential divisions among anti-incumbency votes split between the AIADMK and BJP.

The Tirunelveli Lok Sabha constituency comprises six crucial Assembly segments: Alangulam, Tirunelveli, Ambasamudram, Palayamkottai, Nanguneri, and Radhapuram. Presently, the DMK holds sway in two segments (Palayamkottai and Radhapuram), the AIADMK in two (Alangulam and Ambasamudram), while Congress and BJP each control one (Nanguneri and Tirunelveli respectively).

In Tirunelveli, the BJP has pinned its hopes on its MLA Nainar Nagenthran. With a vast electorate of 16 lakh, including 840,000 women, this Lok Sabha constituency ranks among the largest, boasting over 300,000 voters. Nagenthran secured victory in the 2021 assembly elections on a BJP ticket.

Much like the scenario in Kanyakumari, the electoral battleground in Tirunelveli is expected to primarily feature a showdown between BJP candidate Nainar Nagenthran and Congress candidate Robert Bruce. Notably, the Tirunelveli Parliamentary constituency has witnessed a commendable voter turnout of 70.46%, surpassing the average.
