Chennai, Oct 26: At a time when Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa is undergoing treatment at Apollo Hospitals, Chennai, for more than a month now, her political rival and DMK chief M Karunanidhi too has fallen ill.

On Tuesday, the DMK announced that their 92-year-old party president was ill due to a drug induced allergy. "Doctors have advised him to take rest," added a DMK member.

After Jaya, now Karunanidhi unwell

The party has also requested people to avoid visiting him and cooperate.

"President Kalaignar (Karunanidhi) is ill because of an allergy caused by a medicine he is using and is taking rest," according to a DMK headquarters release.

The allergy, for the past few weeks is due to one of the drugs he is taking, it said.

"Doctors have advised him to take rest for some more days. Hence, visitors should avoid making a visit to him and cooperate," the release said.

Meanwhile, the 68-year-old AIADMK supremo is undergoing treatment at Apollo Hospitals, Greams Road in Chennai, since September 22.

According to a medical bulletin issued by Apollo Hospitals recently, Amma is "interacting" and her health condition is "progressing gradually".

The Raj Bhavan, Chennai, had also issued a press release recently. The press release said Tamil Nadu Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao visited Apollo Hospitals, where Jayalalithaa was undergoing treatment.

"Rao visited the chief minister in the ward where she is undergoing treatment. The governor was happy to note that the chief minister is progressing well," Raj Bhavan release said.

Since the AIADMK is maintaining utmost secrecy about Amma's health status, there is a lot of speculation about the nature of her illness.

Now, if the DMK also adopts similar method of keeping quiet on Karunanidhi's health, rumours are likely to spread more about the DMK chief's medical condition.
