Death Toll In Tamil Nadu Hooch Tragedy Reaches 57; Over 200 Still Undergoing Treatment

The death toll in Tamil Nadu Hooch Tragedy rose to 57 as one more person died on Monday, according to the updated information by the district administration.

As of now, 216 patients are receiving treatment in multiple government hospitals. 12 people are admitted at Puducherry, 20 are undergoing treatment at Salem and four are in the Villupuram government hospital, said the district administration.

So far, 32 people have died at the Government Kallakurichi Medical College and Hospital, 18 at the Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College and Hospital in Salem. Four people have died at the Government Villupuram Medical College and Hospital and three at the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (Jipmer) in Puducherry.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin said that the state government will cover educational expenses and hostel fees of the children who have lost either one
or both parents in this brutal tragedy. The Chief Minister also declared ₹10 lakh ex-gratia for families of deceased victims and ₹50,000 for those undergoing treatment.

Tamil Nadu Police investigation uncovered nearly 300 litres of buried adulterated alcohol, while authorities also seized a large quantity of spurious liquor stored in tyre tubes and barrels containing raw materials for fermentation near Kalvarayan Malai.

On Sunday, police arrested Sivakumar, one of the main suppliers of methanol to the illicit alcohol dealers in Kallakurichi. As per Times Now, he had been hiding in
his sister's house in Sulapallam, Chennai.

Currently, ten arrests have been made in this case, of which four were said to be in possession of 1500 litres of solvents at a chemical warehouse in Vadaperumbakkam of Tiruvallur and more than 60 people have been detained.
