Former DMK leader D Napoleon joins BJP

Chennai, Dec 21: Former Union minister D Napoleon on Sunday joined the BJP after he resigned from the DMK on Saturday. Napoleon, 51, quit from the DMK in a letter written to DMK chief M Karunandihi and general secretary K Anbazhagan.

He said: "I am resigning from the primary membership of the DMK which had groomed me from the age of 16. I have served the party for the past 35 years," a New Indian Express report said.

Napoleon's induction into the BJP is seen as a major gain for the BJP in the run-up to the assembly election scheduled in 2016.

A close relative of former minister KN Nehru, Napoleon was sidelined in the DMK for supporting Karunanidhi's elder son MK Alagiri. He was also staying away from party work for some time now.

Meanwhile, music director Gangai Amaran, actor Gaythri Raghuram and many office-bearers from the DMK, AIADMK and Congress joined the BJP on Saturday in the presence of Sahah, the report added.

Shah took on Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi who accused it of not doing anything in the last six months and produced a list of achievements of the Narendra Modi government at the Centre, including projects and missions like Jan Dhan Yojana, Smart Cities Project, Swachh Bharat Mission and others, the report added.
