After Bengaluru-Chennai Via Vellore Project, Tamil Nadu’s Road Network Set For Further Upgrade
Tamil Nadu's Road Network: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, has unveiled several road infrastructure initiatives aimed at transforming Tamil Nadu's transportation network and boosting regional connectivity.
District-Wise Projects
Erode District
- ₹36.45 crore allocated for widening SH-20 into a dual two-lane divided carriageway.
- Project includes paved shoulders, stormwater drains, and a high-level bridge over 2.9 km.

Tiruppur District
- ₹6.84 crore sanctioned for improving the Mettukadai-Moothampalayam Road.
- Enhancements include intermediate lane widening, curve improvements, culvert reconstruction, and retaining wall construction across 4.2 km.
Madurai District
- ₹18.29 crore allocated to upgrade SH-154 with widening, strengthening, protective measures, and cross-drainage works over 6 km.
Thanjavur & Trichy Districts
- ₹20.52 crore approved for upgrading the Mehalathur-Pathalapettai Road.
- Improvements include converting single-lane and intermediate-lane sections to two-lane standards across 9.4 km.
Dindigul District
₹5.8 crore set aside for enhancing the Dharmathupatti-Adalur-Thandikudi Road.
The project includes culvert reconstruction and retaining wall construction over 4.4 km.
These initiatives, funded under the Central Road and Infrastructure Fund (CRIF), are expected to reduce travel time, enhance road safety, and spur economic development.
Access-Controlled Highway in Tamil Nadu
In a separate announcement, Gadkari outlined a ₹1,338 crore project for a 28-km access-controlled highway.
- Features include a four-lane main carriageway with paved shoulders and two-lane service roads on both sides.
- A 10-km bypass around Walajapet and Ranipet aims to alleviate congestion in these towns.
- Infrastructure additions: Four major bridges and two railway over-bridges.
Boost to Key Cities
The new corridor will enhance connectivity between Chennai, Bengaluru, Tirupati, and Vellore. Improved access to Vellore, home to the Christian Medical College (CMC), will benefit patients, professionals, and visitors.
These projects reflect the government's commitment to modernizing infrastructure, improving transportation efficiency, and driving socio-economic growth in Tamil Nadu.
