Haryana govt hands over 'empty envelopes' to 2 CWG players

Har: 2 CWG players get empty envelopes
Chandigarh, August 11: Two Commonwealth Games (CWG) participants were left shocked when they received empty envelopes from the Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, during the felicitation ceremony on Friday.

According to a report, Hooda honoured CWG athletes by giving them cash rewards worth Rs 13.72 crore.

The ceremony took place at the Rajiv Gandhi Education Cvity in Sonepat, Haryana.

The empty envelopes were 'mistakenly' handed over to athlete Jaideep Singh and swimmer Prashant.

Jaideep was quoted as saying, "I stood fourth in discuss throw at CWG. I was deeply hurt after opening the envelope. The government should not treat sportspersons like this."

Haryana Paralympic Association general secretary Giriraj Singh told mediapersons that the names of Jaideep and Prashant were included in the participants category list of Rs 5 lakh cash reward each, at the last moment as they had won any medal at the CWG."

The sports department mentioned duo's names but forgot to add cheques in the envelopes.

Subhash Sharma, the deputy director of the awards branch of the sports department, who realised the mistake, assured that the cheques will be handed over to players within 10 days.
