Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Majhi Implements Proactive Measures To Combat Crimes Against Women
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Majhi has ordered to take proactive steps to deal with crimes against women. The state government is determined to bring significant changes and put the offenders behind bars.
Chief Minister Majhi has instructed senior police officers to treat women complainants with utmost respect and care, regardless of the time they arrive at police stations. This directive is part of a broader zero-tolerance policy towards crimes against women. The government aims to ensure swift justice in such cases, with no exceptions for perpetrators. This commitment stems from a historical conviction rate of only 9.73% for these crimes between 2000 and 2022.

To address this, the Chief Minister has tasked the Director General of Police (DGP) with submitting a detailed report within a week. This report will cover the current state of crimes against women, conviction rates, and pending investigations at the district level. Further actions will be decided in consultation with the Law Department. The goal is to create an environment where women and girls can move freely without fear.
This marks a significant shift in Odisha's political landscape, as it is the first time a Chief Minister has taken such direct involvement in resolving these issues. Majhi does not hesitate to involve his ministers when necessary. Recently, he personally intervened in a dispute at a Bhubaneswar police station, ensuring justice was served promptly and ordering a judicial inquiry.
The Chief Minister's hands-on approach extends to other incidents as well. In Balasore district, an alleged assault on an Anganwadi worker prompted immediate action from Majhi. He directed Deputy Chief Minister Parvati Parida to contact the victim directly and instructed local authorities to take necessary measures, resulting in the arrest of three accused individuals.
Historical Context and Recent Developments
Odisha's past governance has faced criticism for ignoring crucial warnings and recommendations. In 2024, reports emerged that the previous government ignored its Forest Department's advice and allowed tree cutting for industrial development in Sundargarh, despite its ecological importance. Similarly, in 2023, violence erupted in Sambalpur due to negligence towards intelligence warnings.
The opposition has also acknowledged the government's recent efforts. Despite being away from headquarters during a critical incident, CM Majhi swiftly returned to Bhubaneswar and resolved the matter peacefully by involving senior ministers and holding late-night meetings.
Odisha's current administration is committed to improving law enforcement efficiency and boosting police morale. The Chief Minister's dedication to addressing crimes against women reflects his determination to transform Odisha into a safer place for all its residents.
