Massive Bhopal Seizure: ₹10 Crore Cash & 52 Kg Gold Linked To Ex-RTO Constable Saurabh Sharma
Massive Bhopal Seizure: A massive haul of 52 kilograms of gold, valued at approximately ₹40.47 crore, and ₹10 crore in cash was seized by the Income Tax (IT) Department in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.
The gold and cash were found in an abandoned car in the dense Mendori forests on the night of Thursday, December 19, 2024. This seizure comes just hours after a Lokayukta raid at the residence of former RTO constable Saurabh Sharma, where authorities confiscated ₹2.5 crore in cash, as well as gold and silver jewels.

Massive Bhopal Seizure and Connection to Saurabh Sharma
The IT department's operation was a major development in an ongoing investigation into corruption and illegal activities linked to former RTO constable Saurabh Sharma, who voluntarily retired last year. Sharma is believed to have extensive involvement in the real estate sector, which may be connected to the seized assets.
The gold and cash were allegedly being transported out of the state when the IT department intercepted the vehicle. The operation involved over 100 police officers and a convoy of 30 vehicles to track down and seize the contraband. Authorities believe the gold and cash may be linked to Sharma's close associate, Chandan Singh Gaur.
Details of the Massive Bhopal Seizure
The vehicle, a white Innova Crysta (MP 07 BA 0050), was found abandoned in an under-construction building in the Mendori jungle. Registered under the name of Chetan Gaur, a person already on the IT department's radar, the car also carried a red plate displaying the RTO insignia.
The bags inside the vehicle were filled with gold bricks and bundles of ₹100 and ₹500 notes, totalling an estimated ₹10 crore in cash. According to a senior officer involved in the operation, the seizure was based on a tip-off about the vehicle carrying illicit goods. "We received input from an unknown source about a vehicle transporting large amounts of cash and gold," the officer stated.
The Lokayukta Raid and Ongoing Investigations
The raid on Saurabh Sharma's residence in Arera Colony earlier in the day added another layer of complexity to the case. During this operation, ₹2.5 crore in cash, along with gold and silver ornaments, were seized from Sharma and his associate. The Lokayukta's actions align with the IT department's investigation, as both agencies are focused on exposing illegal financial activities connected to public figures and their networks.
Sharma's connections to high-profile figures in the real estate business have raised suspicions about the source of the seized assets. As investigations unfold, authorities are likely to explore further links between the seized wealth and local criminal activities.
Significance of the Operation
This operation highlights the growing efforts by the Indian government to combat corruption and money laundering. The seizure of such a large sum of gold and cash signals the scale of illegal financial networks operating in the state. With further raids expected, the authorities are determined to uncover the full extent of Sharma's alleged involvement in these illicit operations.
In conclusion, the latest developments in Bhopal underscore the government's ongoing crackdown on financial corruption and illegal wealth. The connection between the Lokayukta raid and the IT department's seizure provides a clear indication of the coordinated efforts to dismantle these criminal networks, and more revelations may emerge in the coming days as investigations continue.
