US Consulate Opens Doors in Bengaluru, Visa Applications Not Available For Now

The United States inaugurated its consulate in Bengaluru on Friday, marking a milestone in strengthening diplomatic relations between India and the US. The event saw the participation of External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, and US Ambassador Eric Garcetti.

Currently operating from a temporary location at the JW Marriott Hotel on Vittal Mallya Road, the consulate will have limited staffing until its permanent facility is ready. Details about the services to be offered will be announced in the coming weeks.

US Consulate Opens Doors in Bengaluru Visa Applications Not Available For Now

For years, Bengaluru residents and those from nearby regions have had to travel to Chennai or Hyderabad for US visa services. The new consulate aims to alleviate this challenge, especially benefiting students and professionals from Karnataka, which accounts for 37% of India's software exports.

The idea of establishing a US consulate in Bengaluru dates back to 2006. Former Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, who initiated the proposal, recalled the political challenges that delayed its realization. "On May 31, 2018, as Chief Minister, I met then-US Ambassador Kenneth Juster to emphasize Bengaluru's rightful claim for a US consulate. This achievement underscores Bengaluru's global prominence," Kumaraswamy shared on social media.

Strengthening Diplomatic Bonds

US Ambassador Eric Garcetti hailed the opening of the US Consulate in Bengaluru as a pivotal moment in the India-US partnership. "This city embodies the US-India relationship. America has greatly benefited from Indian talent and visitors. The more we build on this foundation, the stronger our ties will become," he remarked.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasized the significance of this development for Bengaluru and bilateral relations. He also announced plans for an Indian consulate in Los Angeles, signaling a growing commitment to mutual engagement.

"Today, we are unlocking the potential of India-US relations. Bengaluru, as a hub of technology and innovation, plays a critical role in this partnership. I look forward to seeing more consulates open in Bengaluru to serve India's interests better," Jaishankar said.

He highlighted the evolving scope of India-US cooperation in key areas such as artificial intelligence, electric vehicles, space, and defense. "Two decades ago, our defense collaboration was minimal. Today, we operate American aircraft like the C-17s and Chinooks. Our partnerships in space and technology will only deepen further," he noted.

Jaishankar also underscored the importance of educational collaboration, envisioning increased joint campuses and student exchange programs. He described the consulate's opening as a milestone in overcoming past "hesitations of history" and fostering a future of shared progress.
