Remembering Onake Obavva: A Tribute To Kannada Female Pride

November 11 is celebrated as 'Onake Obavva Jayanti' throughout the state, honoring the memory of Onake Obavva, a remarkable woman warrior who, in the 18th century, valiantly faced the forces of Hyder Ali wielding a pestle ('onake' in Kannada) in the historical setting of Chitradurga.

Located 200 km northwest of Bengaluru, Chitradurga Fort, known locally as Elusuttina Kote (the fort of seven circles in Kannada), holds significance as the backdrop of Onake Obavva's courageous feat. As we observe 'Onake Obavva Jayanti,' it becomes imperative to pay homage to our indigenous heroines who, against all odds, fearlessly fought for independence.

Remembering Onake Obavva: A Tribute To Kannada Female Pride

Onake Obavva, a non-princess and the wife of a fort guard in Chitradurga, demonstrated exceptional courage when she heard the subdued sounds of Hyder Ali's soldiers attempting to breach the fort defended by her husband. Armed with an Onake, or pestle, she confronted the invading soldiers, dispatching them one by one with precise blows to the head. In a display of remarkable ingenuity, she quietly disposed of the bodies, ensuring they went unnoticed.

In the annals of history, Onake Obavva is credited with single-handedly thwarting several invading soldiers from Hyder Ali's army during their attempt to capture Chitradurga Fort in 1779. Her daring act has elevated her to the status of an icon representing Kannada female pride.

The spot where she stood guard, known as Obavvana Kindi, stands as a testament to her bravery and is a reminder of the valor displayed by unsung women warriors like Onake Obavva.
