Namma Metro Yellow Line: RV Road To Bommasandra Stretch Ready On Track For January Launch

Bengaluru is set to experience a transformative upgrade in its public transportation system with the anticipated launch of the Namma Metro Yellow Line in late January 2025. This new metro line is designed to significantly improve accessibility and streamline travel across the southern parts of the city, efficiently connecting key industrial and residential areas.

Stretching 19.15 kilometers from RV Road to Bommasandra, the ₹5,745-crore project will feature approximately 16 stations, including key stops at Jayadeva Hospital, BTM Layout, Silk Board Junction, and Electronics City.

One of the highlights of the Yellow Line is the Jayadeva Hospital station, poised to become a major interchange hub and distinguished as India's tallest metro station at 39 meters. This six-level station will offer a variety of features, including an underpass, road, flyover, and connections to both the Yellow Line and Pink Line platforms, ensuring seamless transitions for commuters.

The launch will initially introduce three trains operating at 30-minute intervals, underscoring the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited's (BMRCL) dedication to enhancing Bengaluru's public transport network.

The Namma Metro Yellow Line also sets a high standard with its modern, driverless trains equipped with state-of-the-art signalling, traction, and braking systems. Safety is a top priority, with inspections by the Commissioner of Railway Safety scheduled for January, paving the way for a safe and efficient launch. To bolster operations, a fleet of 36 trains is planned, including 15 six-coach trains expected to arrive by August 2025 to meet anticipated passenger demand.

Despite the optimism surrounding this project, there are concerns regarding accessibility at the Bommasandra station. The absence of a pedestrian lane poses challenges for commuters heading to Jigani, Bommasandra, Chandapura, and Attibele, prompting BMRCL to address these issues promptly. Nonetheless, the introduction of the Yellow Line marks a significant advancement in Bengaluru's metro infrastructure.

In enhancing operational diversity, one of the trains will be imported from China, while the remainder will be manufactured in West Bengal. This decision aims to expedite the scaling of the Yellow Line's operations as additional trains integrate into the fleet. Although the line will start with a limited number of trains, plans for expansion signal a long-term strategy to improve urban mobility within Bengaluru.
