Namma Metro Rush: Can It Handle The Surge As Tech Firms Return To In-Office Work?

For passengers traveling on Bengaluru's 43 km Namma Metro Purple Line, the daily commute has become a daunting task. Overcrowding, poor frequency of trains, and frequent delays are just a few of the many issues faced by commuters. The situation has taken a turn for the worse with the recent surge in ridership due to tech companies mandating employees to return to the office.

The Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has seen a significant increase in daily ridership, peaking at 800,000 on most weekdays. This has led to chaotic scenes of overcrowding, with passengers fighting for space inside coaches and doors not closing due to the sheer number of people.

A recent viral video showed two passengers engaging in a physical altercation inside a crowded train, allegedly sparked by an argument over someone pushing another passenger.

BMRCL officials have attributed the surge in ridership to tech companies' new policies requiring employees to return to the office most days. Companies such as Google, Amazon, Meta, Flipkart, TCS, Infosys, Wipro, HCLTech, and Cognizant have introduced policies linking variable pay to attendance, resulting in more employees returning to their offices.

The Namma Metro Purple Line, which connects Challaghatta in West Bengaluru to Kadugodi (Whitefield) in East Bengaluru, is particularly affected. Benniganahalli station, which started operations in October 2023, has become one of the busiest stations on the line.

Metro trains on both operational lines - Purple and Green - are overcrowded due to delays in the delivery of coaches from Chinese company CRRC. The lack of coaches has forced BMRCL to operate short-loop services from Nadaprabhu Kempegowda Majestic interchange station towards Whitefield.

In response to the crisis, BMRCL officials have proposed allowing AC feeder buses inside company campuses. However, regular commuters like Shashidhar feel that the corporation is not responsive to public suggestions on social media.
