Namma Metro Pink Line Update: TBM Tunga Achieves Final Breakthrough At Nagawara Receiving Shaft

In a significant development for Bengaluru's Namma Metro Phase-2 project, the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) TUNGA has achieved its final breakthrough at the Nagawara receiving shaft. This marks the penultimate milestone in the extensive tunneling work for the Pink Line, a critical phase in the city's expanding metro network.

TBM TUNGA successfully tunneled a distance of 936.6 meters from Kadugondanahalli Station to the South Cut & Cover Shaft at Nagawara Station. This accomplishment brings the total completed tunneling length to 20,582.7 meters out of the 20,992 meters planned for the project.

Tunga is the eighth TBM to finish its work on the Pink Line, following TBMs Urja, Varada, Avni, Lavi, Vindhya, Vamika, and Rudra. Tunga commenced its journey from KG Halli on February 3, 2024, and emerged at Nagavara's south cut-and-cover shaft at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

With this latest breakthrough, 98 percent of the Pink Line's total 20,992 meters of tunneling has been completed, with 20,582.7 meters now finished, according to the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), as reported by Financial Express.

The ninth and final TBM, Bhadra, is currently boring a parallel tunnel from KG Halli to Nagavara. With 529.7 meters remaining, Bhadra is expected to complete its work by the end of October, a senior BMRCL official confirmed.

The Namma Metro Phase 2 project has been a mammoth engineering effort, involving advanced tunneling technology and meticulous planning to navigate Bengaluru's challenging underground terrain. With TBM TUNGA's final breakthrough, the project is now nearing its final stages, with only a small section of tunneling left to complete.
