Police visited a hospital here on Saturday to check whether legendary

Manna Dey, who is admitted to the hospital because of age-related ailments, is alive or dead! According to a

published on Monday, the officers clicked photographs of the nonagenarian, questioned him and even sought to see his medical bills from the hospital authorities.

The incident took the hospital and doctors by surprise. One physician even expressed his disgust over such action taken by the Kolkata Police, said the report.

Manna Dey is admitted in a hospital in Bangalore for over four months now. Recently, allegations were made about Rs 30 lakh being siphoned off from a joint bank account that Dey shared with his nephew in Kolkata. The singer's daughter and son-in-law approached the police commissioner but yet nothing allegedly happened. Was the hasty action taken by the Kolkata Police on Saturday a sort of preparation to defend itself against its alleged inaction on recovering the money in the court?

The incident also drew flak from the artistes' circle in West Bengal.

In April, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited Dey here to facilitate him with an award.
