Karnataka Weather Alert: Could Thundershowers Make A Comeback In Bengaluru?

Get ready for a possible change in weather, Bengaluru! There's a chance of light to moderate thundershowers hitting the city between 5:30 PM and 11 PM tonight.

This comes after a dry spell following some light to moderate showers in the north-northwest and western parts of the city last Friday evening. The previous active weather phase, which began on May 2nd, concluded on May 24th.

Bengaluru Rains update

Meteorological experts suggest this might be the beginning of a new phase, potentially a farewell thunderstorm (TS) phase transitioning into the beginning of the southwest monsoon (SWM) season.

Last Friday, parts of North-NW and West Bengaluru experienced light to moderate showers in the evening, but the city has remained dry since then. The weather phase that started on May 2nd concluded on May 24th, and it appears a new phase is commencing. This phase, referred to as the farewell thunderstorm (TS) phase, is expected to transition into the Southwest Monsoon (SWM) starting phase.

Today, there is a possibility of isolated thunderstorm in Bengaluru. The likelihood of more widespread thundershowers will increase significantly over the weekend, affecting not just Bengaluru but the entire South Interior Karnataka (SIK) region.

Residents are advised to stay updated on the latest weather forecasts and be prepared for sudden changes in weather conditions.

Bengaluru rains: Weather Forecast

Meanwhile, Kerala is set to face another bout of downpours with the early arrival of the monsoon.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced today as the official start of the southwest monsoon season in Kerala. This typically occurs around June 1, but this year, strong westerly winds and a weather phenomenon known as a shear zone have created conditions for torrential rains in the state.

Over the next five days, heavy rains (64.5 mm-115.4 mm) are expected to drench Kerala and Mahe. Additionally, the region will likely experience widespread moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning over the next seven days.

The rainfall activity may also extend into neighboring states. Tamil Nadu and South Interior Karnataka are forecasted to receive heavy rains between Saturday and Monday (June 1 and 3).
