Karnataka School Holidays: Red Weather Alert Prompts Closure of Schools in Dakshina Kannada
Karnataka school holidays: Heavy rains across coastal and Malnad districts of Karnataka has brought normal life to a halt, prompting authorities to declare holidays for schools, Anganwadi centers, and PU colleges in heavily affected areas.

In Dakshina Kannada district, where heavy downpour has disrupted traffic and flooded low-lying areas, Deputy Commissioner Mullai Mugilan has declared a two-day holiday on May 27 and 28 for all government and aided schools, private educational institutions, and pre-university colleges, including Anganwadi centers. The precautionary measure aims to ensure the safety of students and staff as rain continues to lash several parts of Mangaluru and neighboring taluks.

Similarly, in Mysuru district, Deputy Commissioner Laxmikant Reddy has declared a holiday for all Anganwadi centers on May 27. The decision comes in light of the ongoing rain and the potential risk it poses to young children and families in vulnerable areas.

Rain Disrupts Life Across Coastal, Hilly Karnataka
The coastal belt-including Karavali, Udupi, and Dakshina Kannada-as well as hilly regions like Chikkamagaluru, Kodagu, and Hassan, have witnessed uninterrupted rainfall for four consecutive days. In Mangaluru, areas like Pumpwell flyover and Kodial Bail Bhagavathi Nagar are submerged, causing severe inconvenience to residents. Overflowing drains have led to water entering homes in several localities, and traffic movement remains severely impacted.
The Netravathi River continues to swell, prompting the district administration to caution those living along the riverbanks.
In Chikkamagaluru, a massive tree fell on a workers' residence in Mudigere taluk, injuring one woman, while Kukke Subrahmanya's Kumaradhara bathing ghat has been submerged due to the rising water levels, halting pilgrimage activities.
Landslides Reported, Coastal Areas on Alert
In Hassan district, continuous rainfall triggered landslides in Sakleshpur, where six families now live in fear. A wall collapse at a popular local eatery in the area resulted in a narrow escape for four individuals. Warnings have also been issued regarding a potential landslide at a hill under roadwork along Shiradi Ghat.
Meanwhile, Padukere Beach in Udupi is experiencing fierce waves, with the sea encroaching dangerously onto the land. Authorities have hoisted red flags on beaches and urged tourists and fishermen to stay away from the coast.
Red Alert Issued, More Rain Expected
On May 27, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has declared Red Alert for multiple districts including Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, and Uttara Kannada, warning of intense rain over the next 72 hours. Orange and Yellow Alerts have also been issued for surrounding regions.
With rainfall showing no signs of slowing, more school holidays are likely in the coming days, particularly in vulnerable districts across Karnataka.
