Karnataka Rains: Is There a Holiday for Schools on Wednesday, May 21 As IMD Issues Alert?

Karnataka Rain: Bengaluru witnessed a dramatic start to the week with intense rainfall beginning Sunday night and continuing into Tuesday, severely disrupting daily life across the city. As visuals of waterlogged roads, stalled vehicles, and rescue boats circulated online, a key question has emerged among parents and students: Will schools remain closed on Wednesday, May 21?

Karnataka Rains Is There a Holiday for Schools on Wednesday May 21 As IMD Issues Alert

Schools Holidays Extension Possible?

At present, most schools across Bengaluru and parts of Karnataka are shut for the annual summer vacation. However, given the ongoing rain situation and the India Meteorological Department's red alert in 6 districts and yellow alert for Bengaluru on May 21, officials may consider extending the holiday period in certain areas if waterlogging persists or if a red alert is issued.

While there has been no official announcement about a rain holiday for schools on Wednesday, sources in the education department suggest that the situation is being closely monitored, especially in flood-prone localities. Authorities are likely to take a call depending on the weather conditions and accessibility in different zones.

Three Killed Due to Electrocution

Amid the downpour, two tragic deaths were reported due to electrocution. The victims were identified as 63-year-old Manmohan Kamath and 12-year-old Dinesh, son of a Nepalese national. Kamath was reportedly trying to drain water from his flooded apartment basement using a motor when he was electrocuted.

CM to Inspect Affected Areas

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM DK Shivakumar are expected to carry out an inspection on Tuesday, May 21, to assess damage and review preventive steps. The Chief Minister confirmed that the heavy rains had also led to a wall collapse, resulting in one fatality.

With more rain predicted over the next 48 hours, and yellow, orange and red alerts active for various parts of Karnataka, the state government may issue further advisories affecting school operations, depending on the IMD updates.
