Karnataka Cold Wave: Red Alert Declared In Bidar Amid Record Low Temperatures
With the onset of cold waves across Karnataka, the India Meteorological Department has sounded an alarm, predicting temperature dips of 5 to 6°C above the usual in the northern regions of the state. This significant drop in temperature has particularly affected Bidar, Vijayapura, and Kalaburgi, where readings have plummeted to between 6-7°C, a stark contrast from the December average of 12-13°C. In response to the severe cold, a red alert has been activated in Bidar for the forthcoming three days, underscoring the seriousness of the situation.
The district administration of Bidar has advised the public to limit outdoor activities, especially avoiding going out before sunrise and after sunset, as temperatures are expected to fall further to 5-6°C in the coming days. This advice comes as Bidar records the state's lowest temperature for the week, prompting residents to stay indoors and use fires, jackets, sweaters, and hats for warmth.

In light of these conditions, the Agriculture Department has cautioned farmers against riding two-wheelers extensively and recommended avoiding agricultural work during the night and early morning hours. This warning is particularly pertinent as Bengaluru, the state capital, also experiences a dip in temperature, with the minimum temperature dropping to 15.5°C this week. Notably, areas like Hemmigepura in Rajarajeshwari Nagar recorded a minimum of 12.2 degrees Celsius, with the temperature around Kempegowda International Airport and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited Airport hovering at approximately 15°C on Monday night.
However, a change in weather is on the horizon, with the Meteorological Department forecasting light to moderate rains in parts of south, coastal, and central Karnataka from Friday, December 20. This shift is attributed to a decrease in air pressure in the Bay of Bengal, which is also expected to lead to a rise in temperatures. The forecast includes light rain in isolated areas of Kolar, Bangalore Urban, Bangalore Rural, Ramanagara, and Chamarajanagar districts, while dry weather is anticipated to persist in other parts of the southern interior of Karnataka.
This weather transition marks a crucial phase for both residents and the agricultural sector in Karnataka, highlighting the need for preparedness and adaptability in the face of changing climate conditions.
