Is the Bengaluru Metro Fare Hike Deferred? BJP Claims Centre Intervention

The proposed Bengaluru Metro fare hike scheduled to take effect from Monday has been kept on hold temporarily, according to BJP MP Tejasvi Surya, who said he spoke to Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar seeking immediate intervention.

In a statement posted on X, Surya said he had a detailed phone conversation with Khattar regarding the proposed revision of Metro fares. He argued that Bengaluru already has the costliest Metro fares in the country and that another increase would place public transport beyond the reach of lakhs of daily commuters.

According to Surya, the Union Minister has instructed officials to temporarily keep the proposed fare hike on hold and said it will not take effect from Monday as earlier indicated. He added that Khattar assured him of a personal review into alleged anomalies in the functioning of the Fare Fixation Committee (FFC), which is responsible for recommending fare revisions.

Surya further stated that the Union Minister indicated that, if the Karnataka government formally requests it, a fresh Fare Fixation Committee could be considered to ensure a more rational and scientific fare structure.

Leader of the Opposition in the Karnataka Assembly R. Ashoka said the intervention has brought temporary relief to thousands of regular commuters who were preparing for higher ticket prices from next week.

Ashoka stated that he had raised concerns about the proposed fare revision, arguing that Bengaluru already bears high travel costs. According to him, the Union Minister held a detailed discussion on the issue and directed that the revised fares not be implemented immediately.

Questions Over Fare Fixation Committee

A key issue flagged by Ashoka is the functioning of the Fare Fixation Committee, which recommends Metro fare revisions. He said Khattar assured him that the matter would be reviewed and indicated that, if sought by the Karnataka government, a fresh committee could be constituted to ensure a more scientific and transparent fare calculation process.

The proposed hike had triggered concerns among daily commuters, particularly office-goers who depend on Metro services for routine travel.

Political Reactions Intensify

Criticising the Congress government in the state, Ashoka alleged that proceeding with the fare hike would have placed an additional burden on lakhs of passengers. He urged the state government to reconsider its approach and initiate a fresh review of the fare structure.

The issue has since taken on political overtones, with the Opposition accusing the state administration of ignoring commuter concerns. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's government has yet to issue a detailed response on the temporary pause.

Janata Dal (Secular) youth wing state president Nikhil Kumaraswamy also criticised the proposed revision, alleging that commuters would have faced a significant financial strain had the hike come into effect. He accused political leaders of engaging in a blame game while ordinary residents grapple with rising costs.

While the pause ahead of the February 9 rollout has brought short-term relief, uncertainty remains over when - and in what form - the metro fare revision may be reconsidered. For now, Namma Metro commuters await clarity from both the state and the Centre on the future ticket structure.
