Hebbagodi And Other New Depots In Bengaluru: How Namma Metro Is Preparing For Growth?
The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) is gearing up for the expansion of its services by building five new depots to cater to the growing number of trains in its network. The new depots will be designed to accommodate the increasing fleet of trains and meet the maintenance and stabling requirements.
Baiyappanahalli Depot: A Unique Model

The Baiyappanahalli depot, which is currently being remodeled, is a unique facility that will cater to two Namma Metro lines operating in opposite directions. The depot, being built at a cost of Rs 249.19 crore, will have two levels: one underground and one at grade, according to TNIE reports. The underground level will have 21 stabling lines, while the at-grade level will have 20 lines. The depot will serve the 16 trains operating on the Outer Ring Road (Phase-2A) and the 21 trains on the Airport Lines (Phase-2B).
Other Depots Under Construction
The Shettigere depot, being built at a cost of Rs 182.33 crore, is expected to be completed soon. The depot will have ten stabling lines at grade and 12 elevated lines in the future. It will be able to accommodate 21 trains and will handle the operation and maintenance requirements of Phase-2B.
The Kothanur depot, with 20 stabling lines, is expected to be completed with 66% of the work already done. The Anjanapura depot, which is building 20 stabling lines for the North-South Green Line, has 50% of the work completed. The Challaghatta depot, the costliest one among all, is building 38 stabling lines and has 99% of the work completed. The Hebbagodi depot, with 99% of the work completed, will take care of the R V Road-Bommasandra Line.
The Kadugodi depot currently takes care of the Namma metro Purple Line and the Peenya depot takes care of the Namma metro Green Line. Most of the operations at Baiyappanahalli Line have been shifted to Kadugodi as the former is being remodeled.
The Operations Control Centre will continue to remain at Baiyappanahalli. The expansion of the metro network is expected to touch a total of 159 trains by 2026-28 in phases. BMRCL is ensuring that all depots are ready to receive and maintain these trains.
