Foxconn’s Bengaluru iPhone Plant Hires 30,000 Workers in Just Nine Months

Foxconn's iPhone assembly plant near Bengaluru is rapidly emerging as one of India's largest electronics manufacturing hubs. Within just nine months of operations, the Devanahalli facility has hired close to 30,000 employees, with a strong focus on young women entering formal factory roles for the first time.

Workforce Growth and Demographics

The plant, which began trial production around April-May 2025, quickly transitioned from pilot runs to full assembly. Around 80 per cent of workers are women, mostly aged 19-24. Many are experiencing structured monthly salaries, formal employment, and on-site accommodation for the first time. A significant share of employees has migrated from neighbouring states, drawn by stable wages, training programs, and secure employment.

Mini-Township Model and Facilities

The Devanahalli complex is designed as a self-contained mini township, featuring residential blocks, healthcare, schools, and recreational spaces. Free accommodation and subsidised meals are provided, helping reduce absenteeism and increase retention. The average monthly salary of Rs 18,000 positions these roles among India's better-paying blue-collar manufacturing jobs for women.

Production Scale and Exports

The facility follows Apple's production calendar, initially assembling the iPhone 16 and now focusing on the iPhone 17 Pro Max for both domestic and international markets. Reports suggest that over 80 per cent of output is exported. Foxconn plans to scale the workforce to 50,000 once all lines are operational, with several dormitories already functional and more under construction.

Investment and Capacity

Foxconn has invested nearly Rs 20,000 crore in the Devanahalli plant, which spans 250,000 square feet and currently runs four assembly lines, with plans to expand to 12 lines. Once fully scaled, it is expected to surpass the older Tamil Nadu facility, which employs around 41,000 workers.

Strategic Importance

The project is a key success under India's Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, which aims to attract global electronics manufacturers and boost local value addition. The plant is supported by a network of 45 local suppliers and includes training programs, with recruits undergoing around six weeks of practical training before joining production lines.

Foxconn's Bengaluru facility highlights the transformative impact of large electronics investments on India's labour market. By creating stable, formal jobs for young migrant women and contributing to Apple's global supply chain, the Devanahalli plant is reinforcing India's position as a major hub for electronics manufacturing.
