DK Shivakumar Visits New York's Sky-Deck, Aims For A New Bengaluru Skyline

Karnataka's Deputy Chief Minister, DK Shivakumar, recently visited New York's iconic sky-deck, 'The Edge,' to gather insights for a similar project in Bengaluru. Accompanied by his wife, Usha, he explored the architectural marvel located on the 100th floor of a Hudson Yards building.

The Edge offers a breathtaking 360-degree view of New York City from its 7,500 square feet glass structure. This visit was part of Shivakumar's broader plan to enhance Bengaluru's skyline with a state-of-the-art sky-deck.

Bengaluru Sky-Deck Plans

Shivakumar engaged in detailed discussions with renowned architects Dr. Babu Kilara and Kenneth Drucker during his trip. These talks focused on the design and feasibility of constructing a similar sky-deck in Bengaluru. Dr. Kilara accompanied him to various skyscrapers in New York to study modern architectural designs.

In addition to Dr. Kilara, Kenneth Drucker from HOK, a global design firm known for iconic structures like the World Trade Centre and Burj Khalifa, provided valuable insights. Reflecting on the potential impact of this project, Shivakumar stated, "If modern technology is combined with strong thoughts, the sky-deck may bring a new definition to Bengaluru's skyline as well as improve the quality of urban development."

Project Approval and Location

The Karnataka Cabinet has given the green light for constructing the Bengaluru Skydeck, which will be South Asia's tallest structure at approximately 250 metres high. The project is estimated to cost Rs 500 crores and will offer panoramic views of the city.

This new landmark will be built along NICE Road on Bengaluru's outskirts due to challenges in finding suitable land within the city centre. Additionally, concerns from the Defence Ministry regarding military facilities near central areas influenced this decision.

Comparative Perspective

To put this into perspective, the Skydeck will be over three times taller than Delhi's Qutub Minar, which stands at 73 metres. Currently, Bengaluru's tallest building is the CNTC Presidential Tower at 160 metres. The Skydeck will significantly alter the city's skyline.

The proposed sky-deck aims to become a key feature in Bengaluru's urban landscape by showcasing advanced architectural design and enhancing urban development. This ambitious project reflects Shivakumar’s vision for modernising Bengaluru while addressing practical challenges.

The Deputy Chief Minister’s visit to New York underscores his commitment to bringing innovative infrastructure projects to Karnataka. By learning from global examples like The Edge, he aims to implement cutting-edge designs that redefine urban spaces in Bengaluru.

As plans progress, Shivakumar’s initiative promises not only an architectural marvel but also a boost to tourism and local economy through such transformative projects.
