Cholera Outbreak In Bengaluru: Health Advisory Issued; Hotels To Serve Boiled Drinking Water

In the midst of a water crisis in Bengaluru, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has issued a health advisory for seasonal diseases and precautions following a confirmed case of cholera. The alert comes after a 27-year-old woman in Malleshwaram was hospitalised on March 30 with symptoms of cholera. However, later test results showed negative for the disease.

According to BBMP officials, the woman was suspected to have cholera, prompting the treating physician to alert the nearby primary health center. The initial screening test indicated positivie for cholera, but the confirmatory lab test on the stool sample returned negative results.

In response to the situation, the BBMP's health advisory emphasizes health education efforts to raise awareness about disease transmission and sanitation practices. The advisory also mentions that nearly 10 water samples have been collected, with results pending from the public health institute lab.

The BBMP has conducted a survey of the suspected disease area and adjoining areas, covering 165 houses. Fortunately, no other cases were detected among the surveyed households.

As a precautionary measure, the BBMP has instructed all zonal health and medical officers to establish rapid response teams at the constituency level to handle any cholera outbreak. Also, hotels, restaurants, and cafes have been advised to provide boiled drinking water to customers.

Health facilities under the BBMP's jurisdiction have been directed to report suspected cholera cases to the Integrated Health Information Platform portal.

The BBMP has also instructed health inspectors to collect water samples daily and send them to public health Institute labs for surveillance.

Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao commented on the situation, stating that it is premature to classify it as an 'outbreak'. He reassured the public that officials are closely monitoring the situation and that samples have been sent for testing.
