Bengaluru's Skies To Shine: Vijayanagar's 215-Foot Flagpole Ready For Republic Day Celebration

As Republic Day dawns, Bengaluru will witness the soaring presence of the tricolour as the tallest flagpole, standing at an impressive 215 feet, takes center stage in Vijayanagar. Financed by former minister and Vijayanagar MLA M Krishnappa through the MLA grant, the project is anticipated to be a highlight on January 26, according to Hemanth HG, the contractor overseeing the construction.

Located at Chandra Layout, the flagpole reaches a height of 210 feet, crowned with a 5-foot Ashoka emblem. Hemanth HG explained that the hoisting and unfurling of the tricolour will adhere to the National Flag Code, with regular replacements every two months to address wear and tear caused by wind. The operation, involving both manual and motorized options, features an 8-mm steel wire connected to a 3HP motor for smooth flag-raising and lowering.

Weighing 19 tonnes, the pole's pile foundation was completed in December, and its erection was facilitated by a crane. Ongoing construction of concrete steps around the flagpost is set to conclude before January 25. Once finished, the project will be handed over to the BBMP for annual maintenance.

MLA Krishnappa clarified that the entire initiative, costing Rs 1 crore, commenced on November 30 of the previous year. He emphasized that the four-headed lion emblem atop the pole will not only be visible to Vijayanagar residents but also to those in neighboring assembly segments. The project aims to avoid the criticisms faced by a previous 213-foot flagpole near Raj Bhavan, which lacked maintenance and an operational team for its hydraulic system.
