Bengaluru’s 2nd Airport Likely Along Kanakapura Road; Two Land Parcels Spanning 9,800 Acres May Be Merged
Bengaluru's proposed second airport is increasingly likely to come up along Kanakapura Road in South Bengaluru, with government agencies now considering merging two shortlisted land parcels into one large airport zone. Officials believe the southern corridor offers better connectivity, more land availability and fewer airspace restrictions compared to other shortlisted locations.
The two shortlisted sites: Chudahalli and Somanahalli are located adjacent to each other along Kanakapura Road. Officials are now exploring whether portions of both parcels can be combined to create an ideal airport land parcel spread across nearly 4,500 to 5,000 acres.

The Karnataka government had shortlisted three locations for Bengaluru's second airport, including a site between Kunigal and Nelamangala near Tumakuru Road. However, agencies including Airports Authority of India (AAI) and Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB) are understood to be leaning towards the southern Bengaluru corridor.
Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar has also repeatedly stated that the proposed airport is likely to come up in South Bengaluru.
According to officials, the Chudahalli site spans around 4,800 acres, while Somanahalli covers nearly 5,000 acres. The Nelamangala-side location stretches across around 5,200 acres.
Officials believe the Kanakapura Road region provides stronger long-term infrastructure potential because of expanding residential layouts, upcoming connectivity projects and easier land planning flexibility.
Sources said the western Bengaluru site near Nelamangala also faces comparatively higher vegetation-related concerns.
Meanwhile, the Karnataka government has appointed Meinhardt EPCM to conduct a detailed feasibility study for all shortlisted sites. The study will examine airspace restrictions, environmental impact, land acquisition feasibility, road and rail connectivity and future passenger demand.
Officials said the final feasibility report is expected within the next few months, after which the state government will take a final decision on the location for Bengaluru's second airport.
