The Karnataka health department, however, has yet to conduct its own testing of the sample. A source from the department stated, "The reports have come from a private hospital, and we have no reason to doubt their tests." Despite this, questions about the specific strain of HMPV remain unanswered.

HMPV is a virus typically found in children under the age of 11, with only about 0.7% of flu samples worldwide being attributed to it. As the situation evolves, authorities have expressed concerns over the lack of available data, particularly regarding the strain of HMPV detected in China, which has contributed to increasing global interest.

Health officials are closely monitoring the situation, and further investigations into the strain of the virus and its possible spread are ongoing. The state's health department has yet to issue a detailed statement on whether additional cases have been found or the potential implications for the public.

On Saturday, the state health department issued an advisory following China's warning about an outbreak of Human MetaPneumoVirus (HMPV). The statement clarified that Karnataka has not reported any cases of HMPV, with the eight-month-old baby being the first confirmed case in the state.

The department also noted that, after reviewing data on respiratory infections in Karnataka, there was no significant rise in cases in December 2024 compared to the previous year.

Additionally, the Government of India has confirmed that HMPV cases have been reported in India previously. Kerala's Health Minister, Veena George, assured that the state is closely monitoring the situation and preparing for potential cases in the event of an outbreak.
