Bengaluru Weather Woes: Work From Home (WFH) Option Gains Urgency Amid Yellow Alert
Bengaluru woke up to a rainy Tuesday, with continued heavy rainfall prompting calls for work-from-home as the city struggles with widespread flooding and traffic chaos.
After receiving 130 mm of rain in just 12 hours on Monday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for Bengaluru and 22 other Karnataka districts until Thursday, forecasting more heavy rains across the state.

The incessant downpour led to major disruptions in daily life and commuting, with several residential areas severely waterlogged. Three people, including a nine-year-old boy, died in rain-related incidents.
In light of these challenges, Bengaluru Central MP PC Mohan appealed to IT companies and corporate offices to allow employees to work remotely for the next two days, aiming to reduce travel risks and ease traffic congestion.
The Karnataka government reported that Bengaluru recorded 104 mm of rainfall on Sunday alone, further worsening flood conditions. With the monsoon showing no signs of letting up, the work-from-home option has become crucial for safeguarding lives and maintaining productivity amid the challenging weather.
Greater Bengaluru Municipal Corporation (BBMP) Chief Commissioner Maheshwar Rao described the rainfall as the second-highest the city has seen in a decade. "At times, situations can spiral beyond control. We are actively addressing the issues," he stated. Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar voiced his concern over the situation and assured the public that long-term solutions are underway.
To assess the situation firsthand, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar will carry out a city-wide inspection tomorrow. "On May 21, DK Shivakumar and I will tour the city all day, accompanied by all Bengaluru MLAs... Today, one person tragically lost their life due to a wall collapse. We will provide ₹5 lakh compensation to the family," CM Siddaramaiah told ANI.
