Bengaluru: Massive Fire Destroys Okinawa Electric Bike Showroom On Rajkumar Road, Investigations Underway

Fire Engulfs Okinawa Electric Bike Showroom

In Bengaluru, a fire incident occurred at the Okinawa Electric Bike showroom located on Rajkumar Road in Rajajinagar, resulting in significant damage. The blaze, which took place on January 27, was reportedly caused by an explosion due to overcharging of a battery. This unfortunate event led to the destruction of numerous electric bikes, with the staff narrowly escaping as flames engulfed the establishment. Thankfully, there were no injuries reported, but the property suffered extensive damage, prompting a thorough investigation by the police and fire services.

The fire brigade swiftly responded to the emergency, managing to extinguish the fire efficiently. Out of the 74 electric bikes housed in the showroom, 19 were completely destroyed, and an additional 9 suffered minor damage. This incident adds to a growing list of fire-related accidents involving electric bike showrooms in Bengaluru, raising concerns over safety standards and the quality of batteries used in these vehicles.

Prior to the fire, the showroom had been under scrutiny by RTO officials for allegedly selling bikes equipped with batteries that did not comply with the specified regulations. The showroom was accused of utilizing high-speed and one-kilowatt batteries, contrary to the permitted low speed of 25 km and use of low wattage batteries. This breach of regulation highlights potential safety risks and underscores the importance of adhering to authorized specifications to prevent such disasters.

Fire Officer Kishore provided insights into the firefighting efforts, stating, "A call was received to the fire control room at 2.06 pm today. Later, two vehicles arrived from the Rajajinagar fire station. The fire has been completely extinguished." He also noted that an investigation is in progress to ascertain whether the cause was a short circuit or a battery explosion, emphasizing that the swift evacuation of the four individuals inside the showroom averted any loss of life.

This incident is not isolated, with previous fires at electric bike showrooms in Bengaluru resulting in loss and damage. Notably, a tragic event last year saw a young woman lose her life in a fire at such a showroom. Additionally, on the first day of the new year of 2025, another fire devastated a bike showroom in B Narayanpura, destroying around 60 bikes of the Yamaha brand. These incidents collectively signal a pressing need for stricter safety protocols and quality controls within the electric bike industry to safeguard against future tragedies.
