Bengaluru Beer Sales Hit All-Time High Amidst Heatwave

Bengaluru, often dubbed the 'Silicon Valley of India,' is not just a bustling hub of corporate activity but also a city cherished by its residents. However, recent challenges such as the notorious Bengaluru Traffic and the relentless Bengaluru Heat Wave have tested their patience.

In the last few months, Bengaluru has been sweltering under the grip of a prolonged heatwave, exacerbating the ongoing Bengaluru Water Crisis. To beat the scorching temperatures, Bengalureans have turned to a surprising remedy - alcohol. According to a report by the Times of India (TOI), the city has witnessed a surge in alcohol consumption, particularly beer, with sales hitting unprecedented levels.

Bengaluru s Beer Sales Soar

TOI quoted a senior official from the excise department, revealing that Karnataka sold a staggering 23.5 lakh carton boxes of beer in just the last fifteen days. This spike in sales is attributed to the soaring temperatures, pushing the state to achieve 61% of its total beer sales for April 2023 within this short period.

Adding to the city's woes is the persistent traffic congestion, prompting the Bengaluru Traffic Police (BTP) to take drastic measures. Starting April 17, all vehicular traffic except two-wheelers has been banned on the KR Puram ramp of the Hebbal flyover. This decision comes as the Bengaluru Development Authority (BDA) undertakes the task of adding two new lanes to the Hebbal flyover to alleviate congestion.

The BTP has issued an advisory, redirecting commuters from Nagavara (Outer Ring Road) towards alternative routes. Those heading towards the city via Mekhri Circle are advised to divert to Hebbal Circle below the flyover, then turn right towards Kodigehalli, and finally take a U-turn to join the service road leading to the city. Similarly, commuters from KR Pura are encouraged to use alternative routes such as IOC-Mukunda theatre road, Lingarajapuram flyover, and Nagavara-Tannery road to enter the city.

As Bengaluru grapples with these challenges, its residents are finding ways to cope, even if it means breaking a few records along the way.
