Ambulance Workers Warn of August 1 Strike If Old Shift System Isn’t Restored
Ambulance staff under the '108-Arogya Kavacha' scheme have issued a warning of a strike starting August 1. They demand the reinstatement of their previous two-shift work system. The Karnataka State 108 Arogya Kavacha Employees' Association representatives, Paramashiva and Chandranna, highlighted that around 3,500 employees are now working under an eight-hour three-shift system with reduced salaries.

Challenges Faced by Staff
The shift change, effective from January 1, replaced the earlier 12-hour two-shift system. This alteration has led to financial strain due to salary cuts. "As per a Government Order, the previous 12-hour two-shift system was cancelled, and from January 1 this year, an eight-hour three-shift system was introduced, along with a salary reduction," Mr. Chandranna said.
Transport Issues and Salary Concerns
Employees working during the early morning and late-night shifts face transportation challenges. "Due to this change, staff working in the 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. shifts are facing difficulties as there is no proper transport facilities available during these hours," Chandranna explained. The lack of transport options has been particularly problematic for those in rural areas.
Impact on Female Employees
Women make up about one-third of the workforce under this scheme. They are significantly affected by the new shift timings due to inadequate transport facilities. The association has urged the government to provide better transport solutions for these shifts and reconsider salary adjustments.
The association's demands include either restoring the previous shift system or improving current conditions with adequate transport and increased salaries. "We want the government to provide adequate transport and basic facilities for those in the 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. shifts to reach their workplace and get back home," stated Chandranna.
The employees' association is firm on its stance that if their demands are not met by August 1, they will proceed with their planned strike action.
