Jobs, AI, and the Future: Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas on What Comes Next
Aravind Srinivas, the CEO of Perplexity, advises young people to focus on mastering artificial intelligence (AI) tools rather than spending excessive time on social media. He believes that proficiency in AI will greatly improve employability. Srinivas acknowledges the challenges posed by the rapidly evolving nature of AI technology, which changes every three to six months.
In a recent interview with Matthew Berman, Srinivas emphasized the importance of reducing time spent on platforms like Instagram and instead investing that time in learning AI systems. "People who really are at the frontier of using AIs [systems] are going to be way more employable than people who are not," he stated. "That's guaranteed to happen."

Adapting to AI's Rapid Evolution
Srinivas pointed out that adapting to fast-paced AI advancements is challenging for many. He noted that humans have historically been slow to adapt, and with AI evolving every few months, it tests our adaptability limits. This rapid evolution requires individuals to continuously update their skills to remain relevant in the job market.
The Perplexity CEO predicts that some workers may lose their jobs if they fail to keep up with AI advancements. However, he sees entrepreneurship as a potential solution for those displaced by AI-driven changes. Entrepreneurs can create new job opportunities by leveraging AI technologies.
Entrepreneurship: A Solution for Job Displacement
Srinivas believes that as AI reduces workforce numbers across various sectors, entrepreneurs must step up to create new employment opportunities. "Either the other people who lose jobs end up starting companies themselves and make use of AIs, or they end up learning the AIs and contribute to new companies," he explained.
His views resonate with broader industry concerns about AI's impact on employment. Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, recently predicted that AI could eliminate 50% of white-collar entry-level positions within five years. Geoffrey Hinton also warned about AI replacing workers in routine intellectual tasks.
Balancing Optimism and Concerns
While some tech leaders express concerns about job displacement due to AI, others maintain a more optimistic outlook. Jensen Huang from Nvidia suggests that AI will transform jobs rather than eliminate them entirely. This perspective highlights the potential for AI to enhance productivity and create new roles.
Srinivas's emphasis on mastering AI tools reflects a growing recognition of their importance in today's job market. As technology continues to evolve rapidly, individuals must adapt quickly to remain competitive and seize emerging opportunities.
