Vegetable, fruit prices soar in Punjab, Haryana

Chandigarh, June 30: Vegetables and fruits have sharply risen in the past few weeks in agrarian states of Punjab and Haryana, sources said here today.

No green vegetable is available for less than Rs 25 a kg while fruit like apple is being sold for Rs 300a kg, sources in grain markets said. Within the last 10 days, rates of vegetables have at least doubled, they said.

Tomatoes are sold for rs 50 per kg while earlier these were sold for Rs 30 per kg while onion has gone up from Rs 12 per kg to Rs 25 per kg. Bitter gourd has gone up to Rs 30 from Rs 15, lady finger from Rs 12 per kg to Rs 30 per kg, squash gourd from Rs 20 to Rs 35, brinjal from Rs ten to Rs 24, capsicum from Rs 20 to Rs 35, beans from Rs 30 to Rs 60, cabbage from Rs 10 to Rs 20and the rates of radish have gone up from Rs 10 to Rs 25 per kg.

Mangat Singh, a fruit seller, said that earlier local grapes were available at Rs 20 to Rs 25 per Kg but now only Australian and Chile grapes are being sold for Rs 300 per Kg. A leading fruit seller in the market said that only Saharanpuri mango is witin the reach of poor people.

It is available for Rs 20 per kg but famous 'Dussehri' mango of Lucknow is being sold for Rs 50 per kg and Safaida for Rs 65 per kg.
