UAS to set up study chair in honour of its Founder Principal

Dharwad, July 15 (UNI) The University of Agriculture Sciences here has decided to institute a 'Study Chair' in the name of its late founder Principal S W Menasinkai in the discipline of Genetics and Plant Breeding.

Announcing this at a press conference here today, Varsity Vice Chancellor S A Patil said a life size bronze statue of Dr Menasinkai would also be erected in front of the varsity in order to inspire future generation of students.

He said Dr Menasinkai took charge of the college of Agriculture in March 1953 at a time when it was on the verge of closure for want of adequate strength of students. Even late Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, who had visited the college during the period, had remarked that there was no point in running the college when it did not have the required number of students.

However, Dr Menasinkai took it as a challenge and toured across the state as well as the neighbouring states to convince the students and their parents about the importance of agricultural education. Gradually, the student strength increased and at a point it became the the most sought after institution. It also attained the status of independent university, he added.

Dr Patil said Karnataka Governor T N Chaturvedi would inaugurate the statue of the eminent educationist on July 17.
