Cauvery row: K'taka refuses TN's plea to release 30 TMC

Cauvery
Bangalore, Nov 29: A nudge by Supreme Court failed to break the impasse over water sharing between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. TN Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa returned to Chennai without a "drop of Cauvery water".

Thursday's talks between Jayalalithaa and her counterpart Jagadish Shettar did not result in any agreement with Shettar refusing to release water.

The meeting in Bangalore's Leela Palace hotel which was scheduled to run for two hours wound up within 50 minutes as Jayalalithaa walked out of the huddle room.

Later, she said that the TN has water for only six days in Mettur reservoir near Salem while farmers in the state were trying to save standing samba crops. She added that the state had asked for the release of 30 TMC over the next fortnight.

Shettar on his part said "Karnataka had only 37 TMC of water and Bangalore needs at least 20 TMC".

On Friday, Nov 30, the SC will hear the Cauvery water case filed by TN.
