President poll: New names join the league

New Delhi, Jun 13: With the presidential race heating up and finance minister Pranab Mukherjee emerging as a front runner, new names have joined the league, said sources.

According to sources, the Congress party is keen on Senior Congress leader Karan Singh joining the race but NCP chief Sharad Pawar and Left leader AB Bardhan have disapproved on the same.

Vice President Hamid Ansari is also a choice that the Congress party was looking forward to; however, sources reveal that Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav was against his candidature.

Mohsina Kidwai, Congress leader in Uttar Pradesh also emerges as a new name to join the league. Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee and SP Chief Mulayam Singh Yadav are unlikely to oppose her candidature, said reports.

Meanwhile, Mamata Banerjee is in favour of Gopal Gandhi as one of the contenders for the race but sources reveal that the Left and Congress are not keen on his candidature.

"The CWC has authorised Congress President Sonia Gandhi to take the final decision about the party's Presidential candidate. Whenever there is some decision taken, we will tell the media," said Manish Tewari, Congress spokesperson.
