Italy likely to give Rs 1 cr to Kerala fishermen's families

The two jailed Italian marines
Kochi, Apr 20: If sources are to be believed then the families of the two deceased fishermen from Kerala will receive Rs 1 crore as compensation from Italy.

Defence Secretary of Italy held a special meeting with the fishermen's families and the Italian ship company officials. Following the meeting, the defence secretary decided the amount of compensation, sources informed on Friday, Apr 20.

The family members of the two fishermen earlier had moved the high court seeking transfer of the case to Lok Adalat. However, sources on Friday informed that they (family members) agreed for an out-of-court settlement.

The two marines Latore Masimiliano and Salvatore Girrone, who were arrested after they shot the fishermen mistaking them to be pirates, are presently lodged in Thiruvananthapuram central jail. Italy raised the amount of compensation to make the two jailed marines free.
