UP assembly elections: 50.16% turnout in fifth phase

Lucknow, Feb 23: The voters registered a brisk turnout of 50 per cent in the fifth round of the seven-phased Uttar Pradesh elections on Thursday, Feb 23, which will be decided the fate of candidates for over 49 seats in the UP assembly.

Minor scuffles and poll boycotts were reported from few areas of Etah, Lalitpur, Jaluanand and Hamidpur over issues of development work.

The political parties contestested in this phase were Bahujan Samaj Party, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress, Nationalist Congress Party, Samajwadi Party (SP) and others.

Sources said that, a total of 50.16 votes were cast till 3:00pm. This was a small increase in the voter turnout for the state, which was recorder at 49 per cent during last assembly elections in 2007.
