J&K: Army, BSF men swept away in massive avalanche

Kupwara, Jan 24: An avalanche has hit Furkian Gali in Kupwara district in Northern Kashmir at around 7:10 am. The tragic incident saw five Army men and two personnel of the Border Security Force (BSF) being swept away in its impact.

Special teams have been rushed for rescue operations. Army sources claimed that avalanche rescue teams have been dispatched to rescue other jawans trapped in the thick sheet of snow. This is the first major avalanche reported in this season.

Jammu and Kashmir has been reeling under the impact of the cold weather with the state being cut off from the rest of the country due to the heavy snow fall. The cold wave was extreme this time around.
