Guj Lokayukta: HC upsets Narendra Modi, govt to move SC

Ahmedabad, Jan 18: It may prove as a major setback for Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi as the High Court delivered its judgment upholding the appointment of retired Judge RA Mehta as the state Lokayukta.

Modi had earlier showed his disappointment with the Governor, Kamla Beniwal's decision to appoint RA Mehta as he had claimed that the governor did not consult the state government before appointing the ombudsman.

Citing the High Court's decision, Modi government on Wednesday, Jan 18 has already declared that the state government will move the Supreme Court seeking judgment on the issue of appointing the Gujarat Lokayukta.

RA Mehta was appointed as Gujarat Lokayukta by the governor in Aug 2011, but Modi government moved a lower court challenging Mehta's appointment as Lokayukta - a post which was vacant since Nov 2003. Later the government moved the High Court where Judge VM Sahai was assigned to pronounce the verdict.
